Overview

Nexus Mutual is the leading onchain underwriting protocol providing cover for DeFi protocols against smart contract risks. By partnering with Symbiotic, they are enabling risk curators to delegate restaked capital as second-loss coverage, unlocking scalable cover at a low cost of capital. This allows Nexus to expand beyond current risk limits, targeting $100M in delegated restaking capital to back DeFi's future.

How It Works

Capital Delegation: Risk curators delegate eligible assets to Symbiotic vaults configured for Nexus Mutual. This capital is locked with an epoch duration of 70 days.
First/Second Loss Structure: For Type B covers, Nexus Mutual underwrites the first 20% of any loss (borne by Nexus). Symbiotic restakers cover the remaining 80% only if a valid claim exceeds Nexus's buffer.
Claim Processing: In a loss event, Nexus Mutual assesses and pays claims from its first-loss pool. If claim payments exceed the first-loss capital under Type A and the 20% under Type B, the middleware slashes restaked capital proportionally.

⚠️ No need for restakers to adjust allocations due to currency movements – Nexus handles the Asset Liability Management.

Reward Opportunity

Sources of Yield: Primarily from cover premiums paid by cover buyers (e.g., DeFi protocols like Aave, Hyperliquid, Pendle). The initial listings could generate ~$4,060,000 in premiums on $100M capital, equating to ~4.06% APY before other incentives/points.
Variability Factors: Yield depends on actual cover sales (no fixed APY). Higher demand for covers increases premiums; claims reduce net yield but are mitigated by Nexus's first-loss buffer and historical low loss rates.
Sustainable Return Model: Built-in revenue sharing for capital providers. Yields are sustainable through pent-up demand and scalable listings – more protocols added means higher premiums distributed to restakers.
Symbiotic Incentives: Earn Symbiotic points for delegating capital to the Nexus network.
Symbiotic Networks: Allocations to other Symbiotic Networks are compatible, provided they are low-risk - traditional provision of economic security for PoS consensus fits the criteria. Other underwriting use cases are not allowed.
